You have paid for limited iCloud storage (say, on the 50GB plan), but still want to save files into a folder on the Desktop or in your Documents without using up that limited storage. You’re away from WiFi and are tethering to your iPhone for data (which is probably not happening much at the moment, admittedly!), and don’t want large video files syncing up to iCloud and eating up your mobile data usage. Sometimes, though, it would be handy to save files to a folder on the Desktop without them syncing to iCloud, if, for example: I’ll freely admit that I’m an inveterate ‘saver to the Desktop’, and then … when I remember, will archive files and folders from there to other locations. Like many Mac users, I use iCloud Drive Desktop and Document syncing to automatically sync folders and files saved to those locations between my MacBook and iMac, and also to make them accessible on my iPhone and iPad.
